Chennai, May 27: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to visit New Delhi on Wednesday for his first official trip to the national capital after assuming office, in a move that is expected to carry both administrative and political significance for the newly formed coalition government in the State.
According to sources, Vijay is likely to leave for Delhi on Wednesday morning and return to Chennai the same day. During the visit, he is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to submit memoranda seeking additional financial assistance and faster approval for key infrastructure and development projects.
The Chief Minister is expected to press for increased Central support for infrastructure expansion, industrial growth initiatives, welfare programmes, pending financial allocations and major connectivity projects viewed as important for Tamil Nadu’s economic progress.
The visit comes only weeks after Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) delivered a major electoral breakthrough in the Assembly elections. Contesting its maiden election, TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly by winning 108 seats, significantly altering Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
However, with the majority mark fixed at 118 seats, TVK fell short of forming the government on its own. Vijay subsequently secured support from the Congress, Left parties, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), enabling him to comfortably cross the required threshold.
The backing from alliance partners paved the way for the formation of Tamil Nadu’s first coalition government in several decades, marking a departure from the State’s long-standing pattern of governance dominated by either the DMK or AIADMK.
Political observers believe Vijay’s maiden Delhi visit may offer the first clear indication of how the new coalition government plans to engage with the Union government while balancing governance priorities and alliance interests.
