Thiruvananthapuram, August 13: Kerala is bracing for another spell of heavy rain, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting intense showers at isolated places in several districts on Thursday and Friday.
Yellow alerts have been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday, where isolated heavy rainfall is likely. Light to moderate rain is also expected across all districts during the day.
The rainfall is forecast to shift towards central and southern Kerala on Friday. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki have been placed under yellow alert, and residents and local authorities have been advised to remain vigilant.
The renewed spell follows a brief weakening of rainfall across the State. Kerala had earlier experienced a week of persistent heavy rain that caused flooding, landslides and widespread disruption in several areas.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has warned of possible coastal flooding and erosion due to the Kallakkadal phenomenon, which involves sudden sea swells generated by distant ocean storms.
Waves ranging from one metre to 1.6 metres were forecast along parts of the Kerala coast, including Thiruvananthapuram between Kappil and Pozhiyoor, Kollam between Alappad and Edava, Alappuzha between Chellanam and Azhikkal Jetty, Ernakulam between Munambam and Maruvakkad, and Thrissur between Attupuram and Kodungallur.
Waves of 1.3 metres to 1.7 metres were also forecast along the Kanyakumari coast in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The coastal warning remained valid until 5.30 am on Thursday.
Fishermen and people living in low-lying coastal areas have been advised to remain cautious because of rough seas, powerful waves and the possibility of seawater entering residential areas. People have also been urged to stay away from beaches and avoid activities near the shoreline during periods of high waves.
Authorities advised fishermen to anchor their vessels securely and maintain sufficient distance between boats to prevent collisions. Coastal communities have been asked to closely follow official weather and sea-condition advisories.
