Heavy rains inundates Kanniyakumari district in South TN

Heavy rains have lashed the Kanniyakumari district with the district being inundated. Tirunelveli district also is having heavy rains after heavy downpours on Saturday and Sunday.

Residential areas and roads are inundated with heavy rains and many dams and reservoirs have discharged surplus water.

Radhapuram in Tirunelveli experienced maximum rains and almost all ponds and lakes are full in the area and most of the roads are underwater making travel impossible.

Train services are halted in the Nagercoil- Tirunelveli line after a landslide between Eraniel and Kuzhithurai led to debris falling on tracks.

Nagercoil –Tirunelveli National Highway is flooded with water after Pazhyar river in Kanniyakumari district has overflown. Traffic at Nagercoil is at a standstill.

After water was discharged from Pechiparai and Perunchani dams,  water had entered most of the houses on the banks of Pazhayar river and the streets at Kothiagramam is submerged in water.

Water resources department officials of Tamil Nadu said that the level of water is rising in Pazhayar river due to the rains in hilly terrains of the district.

Meanwhile, water from Mettur dam is released on Sunday early morning after the height touched the maximum capacity of 120 feet.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is coordinating with district collectors of all the delta districts and districts of South Tamil Nadu.
