Tangedco allows private companies to repair transformers in its premises

Tamil Nadu power utility, Tangedco has allowed private industries that supply transformers to conduct maintenance and repair in its premises

Chennai, Oct 5 (BPNS)

In a move to curtail expenditure, the Tamil Nadu power utility, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (Tangedco) has allowed the private industries that supply transformers to conduct maintenance and repair in its (Tangedco) premises.

According to Tangedco officials, the state of Tamil Nadu have 3.25 lakh transformers across the state connecting High Tension (HT) and Low Tension (LT) lines.

Tangedco will get paid by the private companies that have supplied the transformers to it as a fee for using its premises to conduct maintenance and repair. It is to be noted that earlier, Tangedco was incurring losses as it used to transport the faulty transformers to the premises of the company that had supplied it for maintenance and repair and the TN power utility had to bear the transport cost and other incidental expenses.

Tangedco has been making systematic losses and with the losses touching around Rs 1. 58 lakh crore the management has decided to cut whatever little expenses it has been incurring. With around 3.25 lakh transformers spread across the state, the new initiative will reduce the losses and would add money to the kitty of the ailing power utility as it will be charging the concerned companies for using its premises.

An official told BPNS that earlier transformers that require major repairs were taken to the plants of the private companies that have supplied them and the transport and labour were borne by the Tangedco.  The company concerned can now send their technicians and engineers to the premises of Tangedco and conduct the necessary repairs.

The Tangedco headquarters have already communicated the decision to all Chief Engineers and Superintending engineers on the maintenance and repair of transformers.
