Six senior students have been arrested for allegedly ragging and assaulting two first-semester students from Kerala at Srinivas College in Mangaluru, police said.
The Pandeshwar police registered a case following complaints from the two students, identified as Adarsh and Jasin Khader, who were admitted to hospital after the alleged assault. Police said all six accused students are also from Kerala.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred when Adarsh and Jasin, both first-semester students, went to a shop near the college for tea on Tuesday. A group of senior students allegedly stopped them and confronted them over wearing black shoes.
The victims told police that the seniors questioned them about their footwear and subsequently subjected them to verbal abuse. They alleged that the accused also made abusive remarks about their parents before the confrontation turned physical.
Adarsh was allegedly assaulted and one of the seniors grabbed his head and twisted it, causing an injury to his neck. Jasin was also allegedly beaten during the incident.
Frightened by the attack, Jasin managed to reach a nearby shop, obtained the telephone number of the police station and contacted the authorities for assistance.
Police personnel subsequently reached the spot and shifted both injured students to hospital. Adarsh, who suffered an injury to his neck, has been fitted with a cervical collar, while Jasin is undergoing treatment for injuries allegedly sustained in the assault.
Police recorded statements from both students and obtained written complaints before registering the case. Six senior students were subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.
According to police, the accused are students of the college’s logistics department.
The college management has also taken note of the allegations and said disciplinary action would be initiated against the students found responsible for the incident.
Police are conducting further investigation into the alleged ragging and assault.
