The Coimbatore District Police on Wednesday filed a chargesheet before a special court in the case relating to the abduction, sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur, completing the investigation within 18 days of the arrest of the accused and paving the way for trial proceedings under the POCSO Act.
The 819-page chargesheet was submitted before the Special Court for trial of cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The final report, e-filed on Tuesday by the investigating team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Karikal Pari Shankar, contains 104 prosecution witnesses and 215 documents.
The case pertains to the death of a 10-year-old girl from Pallapalayam near Sulur, whose body was recovered from a private property near the Kannampalayam tank on May 22. The incident triggered widespread public outrage and led to an intensive police investigation involving multiple units.
Police arrested K. Karthi (35) and R. Mohan (31), both residents of Pallapalayam, on May 23 in connection with the case. Karthi has been charged under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the POCSO Act, while Mohan faces charges relating to his alleged role in the crime.
According to investigators, the probe involved extensive forensic examinations, DNA profiling, cyber forensic analysis and the recording of witness statements. Police also carried out scientific tests and examined communication and movement records relevant to the investigation.
Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R.V. Ramya Bharathi said the swift completion of the investigation was made possible through close coordination among different police units and the timely receipt of forensic reports. She added that two eyewitnesses came forward during the investigation and provided crucial assistance to the probe.
Police said the chargesheet incorporates scientific evidence, witness testimonies, post-mortem findings and documentary records collected during the investigation. With the filing of the final report, the case will now move to the trial stage before the Special POCSO Court, which will conduct further proceedings in accordance with law.
