Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin said that the passing of the Waqf bill in parliament was highly condemnable and that a case will be filed in Supreme Court.

Chief Minister Stalin also said,”Tamil Nadu will fight, and it will succeed in this fight “

The DMK members in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly are participating in the session wearing black badges in protest to the Lok Sabha passing the Waqf bill.

Speaking at the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly on Thursday (April 3), Stalin said that on March 27, 2025, a resolution was passed in the Tamil Nadu assembly urging the withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill, as it affects religious harmony and negatively impacts the minority Islamic community.

A majority of the political parties in India opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. It is condemnable that the Bill has been passed in Lok Sabha despite widespread opposition to its provisions. Though the Bill has been passed, nobody should overlook the number of votes against it,”

Stalin said, recalling that the Assembly passed a resolution against the bill last week. Stalin contended that passage of the Bill at 2 am on Thursday in Lok Sabha with help from some alliance partners despite opposition
from a majority of parties is an attack on the Constitution of India. “

This is an attempt to disturb communal harmony in the country. Let me tell this House that the DMK will challenge the Bill in the Supreme Court,” Stalin announced.

He said that a total of 232 members opposed it, which is not an insignificant number.

The opposition count could have been even higher, but the law must be completely withdrawn.

The Chief Minister further remarked that passing the Waqf bill at 2 AM, disregarding opposition from the majority of India’s political parties is an act that disrupts religious harmony.

It may be recalled that Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the early hours of Thursday, April 3, after an 12-hour-long debate, with 288 members voting for it and 232 voting against.

The hours-long debate saw the ruling NDA defending the legislation as beneficial for minorities, while the opposition described it as “anti-Muslim”. The Bill was passed after all amendments moved by the opposition members were rejected by voice votes.

In his reply to the debate, Union Minorities Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said there is no place in the world safer than India for minorities and they are safe because the majority is entirely secular.
