Veteran actor Pradeep Singh Rawat, best known for his powerful portrayals of on-screen villains in Indian cinema, passed away on Tuesday after battling blood cancer. He was 74.
Rawat enjoyed a distinguished career spanning several decades, leaving a lasting impression across Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam cinema with his commanding screen presence and memorable performances.
He gained nationwide recognition for playing the ruthless antagonist Ram in director A.R. Murugadoss’ Ghajini, starring Suriya in the Tamil original. He later reprised the role in the Hindi remake featuring Aamir Khan, further cementing his reputation as one of Indian cinema’s most formidable villains. Another of his acclaimed performances came in the Oscar-nominated period drama Lagaan, in which he played Raja Puran Singh, a role that earned him widespread appreciation.
Apart from his work in Hindi and South Indian films, Rawat also appeared in several Malayalam movies, including China Town, Cousins and Ithu Pathiramanal. His versatility enabled him to move effortlessly between languages and genres, making him a familiar face to audiences across the country.
In television, Rawat was equally admired for portraying Ashwatthama in the epic series Mahabharat, a role that remains one of the defining performances of his career.
