Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 4:
Amid relentless heavy rainfall across Kerala, district administrations have declared a holiday for all educational institutions in five districts—Pathanamthitta, Kasaragod, Idukki, Wayanad and Alappuzha—on Wednesday (August 5) as a precautionary measure.
The holiday will apply to schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis, madrassas, tuition centres, coaching institutes and other educational institutions in the affected districts. District Collectors, however, clarified that previously scheduled university and public examinations will be held as planned unless notified otherwise.
In Wayanad, where the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert, the district administration announced a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis, religious study centres, tuition centres, coaching institutes and special classes. Residential schools and colleges have been exempted from the order, although authorities have directed institution heads to ensure the safety of students and suspend classes if local conditions warrant.
In Pathanamthitta, educational institutions, including professional colleges, will remain closed owing to continuing heavy rain and the operation of flood relief camps in several school buildings.
The Idukki district administration also declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, schools, nurseries, madrassas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and ICSE schools, in view of persistent heavy rain and strong winds. Residential educational institutions where students stay on campus have been exempted.
In Kasaragod, the holiday has been declared following an IMD Red Alert for Tuesday and an Orange Alert for Wednesday, coupled with widespread waterlogging and overflowing water bodies across the district. The order covers schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis, madrassas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and ICSE schools, tuition centres and other educational institutions. The District Collector clarified that university examinations, public examinations and scheduled interviews will be conducted as planned.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and follow official weather advisories as heavy rain is expected to continue across several parts of the State.
