Heavy rains likely in Kerala; Yellow Alert in northern districts

- June 24, 2025

Thiruvananthapuram, June 24

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall across Kerala today, with intense showers expected particularly in the northern districts.

A yellow alert has been issued in five districts — Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram — warning residents to remain cautious of potentially hazardous weather.

According to IMD, a high-level cyclonic circulation persists over the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. Another cyclonic circulation lies over southern Uttar Pradesh. These weather systems are expected to influence widespread rainfall across Kerala over the next five days.

Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected-

The weather department has also warned of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across the state. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 60 km/h in some areas through June 27. Strong and widespread rainfall is likely tomorrow, with yellow alerts extended to Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Marine Weather Warnings-

The IMD has issued marine warnings across multiple coastal and offshore regions due to likely rough weather and strong winds:
• East-central and west-central Arabian Sea
• Northeast and southeast Arabian Sea
• Southern Gujarat coast, Konkan coast
• Northern Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal coasts
• Northwest, northeast, and central Bay of Bengal
• Andaman Sea

Winds are expected to blow at 40 to 50 km/h, occasionally reaching up to 60 km/h in these regions. Particularly over the central-eastern Arabian Sea and adjacent central-western parts, gusts could touch 65 km/h until June 27, potentially affecting maritime operations.

Fishermen and coastal residents are advised to avoid sea ventures during this period.
