Kanimozhi’s presence at Speaker’s tea meeting sparks political debate

DMK MP Kanimozhi’s participation in a tea meeting hosted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the conclusion of Parliament’s Monsoon Session has sparked political debate, as other constituents of the INDIA bloc stayed away.

The session, which began on July 20, witnessed repeated disruptions as Opposition parties raised issues including alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, police action against protesting students in Delhi and allegations of misappropriation of donations collected for the Ram temple.

The protests resulted in frequent confrontations between the Opposition and the Union government. Despite objections from Opposition members, the government introduced and secured the passage of several key Bills.

Tensions continued on the final day, forcing Birla to adjourn the Lok Sabha sine die. The Rajya Sabha was subsequently adjourned, bringing the Monsoon Session to a close.

Following the adjournment, the Speaker hosted the customary tea meeting for MPs from different political parties. While invitations were reportedly extended to all parties represented in Parliament, the Congress, Samajwadi Party and several other Opposition parties boycotted the gathering.

Kanimozhi attended on behalf of the DMK, making it the only INDIA bloc constituent represented at the meeting.

Her presence attracted attention amid allegations by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Congress and other parties that the DMK was moving closer to the BJP. Critics have claimed that the BJP is seeking the DMK’s support for key legislative measures, including proposals linked to the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies.

Kanimozhi’s participation has consequently fuelled speculation about the DMK’s relationship with the Congress and its future role in the INDIA bloc.

Responding to questions at the Parliament complex, Kanimozhi sought to play down the controversy. She said the DMK was maintaining a political distance from the Congress but continued to remain part of the INDIA alliance.

Her clarification, however, is unlikely to immediately end speculation over the DMK’s decision to attend the meeting while its Opposition allies stayed away.
