Chennai, May 24:
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S. Keerthana on Sunday sought to clear the controversy surrounding her reaction during a media interaction on the brutal rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Coimbatore’s Sulur area, saying that her body language had been misunderstood and unfairly turned into a political issue.
The controversy began after a video clip from a media interaction in Virudhunagar was circulated widely on social media. In the visuals, Keerthana was seen smiling while responding to reporters’ questions, drawing criticism from opposition parties and social media users who accused her of showing insensitivity while addressing an issue that has shaken Tamil Nadu and sparked widespread public anger.
Responding to the criticism through a post on X, the minister said the visuals had been taken out of context and interpreted in a misleading manner for political gains. She explained that she had met reporters after attending an industry-related briefing and had smiled naturally at the conclusion of the question-and-answer session.
According to Keerthana, the expression was not directed at any particular question and had no connection with the tragic crime involving the child.
Describing the incident as deeply disturbing and painful, the minister said the Tamil Nadu government had acted swiftly after the case came to light. She pointed out that Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay immediately directed officials to intensify the investigation and ensure prompt action.
Keerthana said police formed five special teams and examined more than 250 CCTV recordings during the probe. She added that the accused, Karthik and Mohanraj, were arrested within 24 hours and would face stringent action under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
She reiterated that ensuring justice for the victim and guaranteeing the safety of women and children remained among the government’s top priorities.
While acknowledging that criticism from opposition parties was part of democracy, Keerthana argued that distorting facts and converting an individual’s personal moments into political weapons was not a healthy practice.
“The Tamil Nadu government will not compromise on public safety and justice under any circumstances,” she asserted.
