Mohanlal to receive Dadasaheb Phalke award 2023 for iconic contribution to Indian cinema

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday announced that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal will be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2023, recognising his monumental contribution to Indian cinema.

The ministry made the announcement through a post on X, noting that the legendary actor, director and producer was being conferred the award for his “iconic contribution to Indian Cinema.” The award will be formally presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mohanlal on the honour, hailing him as “a leading light of Malayalam cinema who epitomises excellence and versatility.” In his message on X, the Prime Minister added, “May his accomplishments continue to inspire generations to come.” He also praised the actor for his stellar work beyond Malayalam cinema, pointing to his acclaimed performances in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi films. “His cinematic and theatrical brilliance across mediums is truly inspiring,” Mr. Modi remarked.

Born on May 21, 1960, Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning more than four decades. He has acted in over 400 films across five languages—Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada—leaving an indelible mark with his effortless screen presence and versatility.

Some of his most celebrated films include Thanmathra, Drishyam, Vanaprastham, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, and the action blockbuster Pulimurugan, which became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time. Known for seamlessly slipping into diverse roles—from intense drama to comedy and action—Mohanlal has built a reputation as one of the finest actors in Indian cinema.

Over his career, he has been decorated with numerous accolades, including two National Film Awards for Best Actor, nine Kerala State Film Awards, and several international honours.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, considered the highest recognition in Indian cinema, now adds another glittering feather to Mohanlal’s cap, celebrating his enduring impact on audiences across India and beyond.
