Chennai,April 3,2025
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of Tamil superstar Vijay has announced a state-wide protest on Friday(April 4), demanding the repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
According to party sources ,TVK has planned demonstrations in all district capitals of the state.
It is reported that TVK leader Vijay has directed all district secretaries to co-ordinate and organise the protests effectively.
This move comes amid the growing opposition to Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which was passed at the Lok Sabha early Thursday, after over a 12-hour debate.
Earlier in the Assembly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that DMK would file a case in the Supreme Court against the Bill.
The Lok Sabha passed the Bill in the early hours of Thursday, April 3, after a 12-hour-long debate. A total of 288 members voted in favour, while 232 opposed it. Despite extensive opposition, all amendments moved by opposition members were rejected through voice votes.
During the debate, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) defended the Bill, claiming it was designed to benefit minority communities. However, opposition parties criticized it as being “anti-Muslim” and detrimental to the principles of secularism.
In his response, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju asserted that minorities in India are safe and secure. “There is no place in the world safer than India for minorities. They are protected because the majority in India is completely secular,” he stated.
The controversy around the Waqf (Amendment) Bill continues to intensify, with several states and political parties planning to take further legal and democratic action against its implementation.
It may be recalled that Vijay officially launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on February 2, 2024, positioning it as a platform against corruption and divisive politics.
While he chose not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he has confirmed that TVK will actively participate in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Following the party’s launch, TVK unveiled its flag and flag song on August 22, 2024, at its headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai.
The party’s first political conference was held on October 27, 2024, in Vikravandi, Villupuram district, attracting a massive turnout of nearly three lakh people.
At the Vikravandi conference, Vijay made a bold political statement, criticising both the DMK and BJP. He labeled the BJP as his ideological opponent and the DMK as his political adversary, accusing the latter of running a family-driven party that exploits Dravidian ideology for personal gain.
He also condemned the BJP for its divisive political strategies.
In response, the DMK dismissed Vijay’s remarks and accused him of indirectly supporting the BJP, branding TVK as the “C team” of the saffron party.
Despite this criticism, Vijay’s influence in Tamil Nadu politics has been steadily rising. His fan club, the All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (AITVMI), made headlines in the 2021 local body elections by winning 115 out of the 169 seats it contested, far surpassing the performances of other star-led parties like Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) and Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), both of which failed to secure any seats.
Vijay has made it clear that TVK will align only with parties that accept his leadership, signaling his ambition to emerge as a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s post in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
