Thiruvananthapuram: Senior journalist and noted political commentator Roy Mathew has been appointed as the Media Secretary to Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, marking a significant addition to the Chief Minister’s team. A familiar face in Kerala’s television news landscape, Roy Mathew is regarded as one of the state’s most influential political observers and media personalities.
Over a journalism career spanning several decades, Roy Mathew built a reputation for sharp political analysis and an unwavering commitment to his views. He began his career with Kalakaumudi in New Delhi, where he honed his reporting skills under the guidance of veteran journalist Nair Sir, who was considered one of the most influential Malayali journalists in the national capital and was known for his proximity to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Roy Mathew later emerged as a prominent figure in television journalism, serving as Kerala head of Zee TV and subsequently as Editor-in-Chief of Surya TV. During his tenure, he was widely credited with creating an environment that encouraged young journalists to excel, contributing significantly to raising professional standards in television news.
Known for his outspoken views and critical approach toward those in power, Roy Mathew frequently faced criticism and abuse on social media but consistently maintained his positions. He had also worked closely with legendary Malayalam writer and cartoonist O.V. Vijayan.
Political circles have viewed his appointment as a recognition of his role in shaping public discourse around V.D. Satheesan’s political rise. Supporters argue that Mathew became one of the strongest public voices defending Satheesan’s positions during television debates, using his sharp, detailed and fact-driven arguments to strengthen the Chief Minister’s public image.
Many political observers see the appointment as a recognition of experience, influence and long-standing contributions to journalism and political communication in Kerala.
