Chennai, June 15 (H.S.): The divorce case involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay and his wife Sangeetha was adjourned once again on Monday, with the Chengalpattu Family Court posting the matter for further hearing on August 7 after neither of them appeared before the court.
When the case was taken up, both Vijay and Sangeetha remained absent and were represented by their respective counsels. In view of their non-appearance, the court deferred the proceedings and fixed a fresh date for hearing.
The high-profile matrimonial dispute has seen a series of adjournments in recent months, with both parties consistently choosing to be represented through their lawyers rather than appearing in person. Legal sources said requests had earlier been made seeking permission for the couple to participate in the proceedings through video conferencing, citing security concerns and logistical difficulties arising from Vijay’s responsibilities as Chief Minister.
The family court had previously adjourned the matter to June 15 after considering submissions from both sides. However, with neither party present on Monday, the proceedings could not make any substantive progress, leading to yet another postponement.
Sangeetha filed the divorce petition before the Chengalpattu Family Court in December 2025, seeking dissolution of her marriage with Vijay on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. She has also sought alimony and requested permission to continue residing in the couple’s Neelankarai residence in Chennai.
The case has attracted considerable public attention because of Vijay’s position as Chief Minister and leader of the ruling TVK. Political observers and the media have been closely following developments in the proceedings, making it one of the most closely watched personal legal disputes involving a serving Chief Minister.
With the latest adjournment, the court is expected to review the status of the case and consider the next course of action when the matter comes up again on August 7.
