TN firecracker unit blast: Death toll rises to five

The firecracker unit blast at Sattur in Virudhunagar district that took place on Wednesday killing four has now claimed the life of one more person. The deceased have been identified as Muniyasamy who was a worker at the ill-fated unit at Sattur in Manjalodaipatti village in Virudhunagar district.

The blast, according to police took place due to friction while chemicals were being mixed at Sri Solai fireworks on Wednesday. Three people died on the spot and one later in the hospital and six were injured.

Of the four who are deceased other than Muniyasamy is the owner of the unit, Karuppasamy, Senthil, Kasi, and Ayyammal.  The condition of an injured woman, Saraswathi who is admitted to Government Rajaji Medical College Hospital, Madurai is serious, according to police.

This is the second blast in Virudhunagar district since the dawn of the new year with the first occurring on January 1st at RKVM firecracker unit at Kalathur in which four people died and six were injured.
